I plan on attending grad school and taking up a teaching assistantship in Grand Forks, ND. Now, I come from Pennsylvania where it's so humid you can swim in the air during most of the year and it snows a good bit, but I know I'm not prepared for a North Dakota winter. Honestly, they scare the crap out of me! And I'd rather not freeze to death. :) Is there any specific winter clothing I should purchase? A special kind of coat, socks, etc? (I plan on putting my business casual clothing and make-up in to a bag and just doing myself up when I arrive before work, rather than trying to walk through it. ;) Also, how safe is it to walk short distances, provided you're reasonably covered? It may be too late for me to get on-campus housing, so I may have to live off-campus. Would it be safe to walk, say, half a mile to campus? Or am I asking for trouble?
